CONSUMER GOODS INDUSTRY - DESIGN LED

The Problem
This client is an award-winning publisher of contemporary greetings cards, stationery and gifts, distributing to an international audience.

When we first started working together in 2022, the owner was at a crossroad with where to take the business next. Their role as principal designer within the business had somewhat reduced and they were busy doing things they just didn’t enjoy doing.

Initially in search of an inhouse Finance Director, the business owner was advised to speak to us and over a cup of tea it was agreed we were suitable for the role. Working alongside their inhouse bookkeeper we provide tax and accountancy services and a Fractional FD provision which sees Mike working one to one with the business owner.

The Solution
Mike started their first session as he does every time.

‘ Why did you set this up and where would you like yourself and the business to be in 5-10 years’ time?’

The response will ring true for many other business owners. It had started as a bit of a hobby to complement a calmer work/life balance, but the business took off and grew beyond expectation.

What the business owner really wanted was to get back to doing what they loved – the design, with less involvement in the day to day running of the business and ultimately regain a better work life balance.

Together, Mike and the business owner reviewed the company structure and after several iterations of the plan, identified the need for a Head of Product and Head of Commercial Operations. And so, the recruitment process began to free up the business owner to enable them to get back to doing what they love.

As a trusted partner whose expertise is valued, Mike was invited to be a part of the interview process, defining the roles, the three stage interviews and shortlisting the successful candidates. The owner had never recruited at this level before, and these new positions were going to be transformative to the business.

The Outcome
We now have less interaction with the business owner which doesn’t sound like a win but most definitely is. Our main point of contact is now Head of Commercial Operations who we have worked closely with to implement monthly management accounts and recently completed a project to help them set their budgets which will be used to guide Sales Targets and other KPIs.

The business has gained greater visibility and knowledge of their finances and this is helping them to shape the future of the business and equip them to make better, more informed decisions.

Mike and the business owner continue to work together on the business as opposed to in the business and they are back doing what they love, whilst we continue to do what we love – the numbers.
